Team Lean Takes A Break

Team Lean coordinators with Memorial Hospital and Manor and the Bainbridge/Decatur County YMCA have decided to take a Team Lean break in 2010 in order to redesign the program for better participation and long term weight loss.

"Team Lean 2009 began with 750 participants and ended with only 450," said Cathy Willis, Memorial's Assistant Administrator for Human Resources. "That's disappointing, considering the success of the first community Team Lean Competition in 2007 when 906 people, or 90% of the participants, stayed with the competition to lose over 16,000 pounds in 12 weeks."

Not only has interest in the annual weight loss competition diminished in the last two years, many participants have not been successful in making permanent lifestyle changes to keep the weight off.
"We don't want to see people losing weight, only to gain it back. That's not healthy. We're going to change our methods before sponsoring the competition again in 2011, and we hope to bring a new and improved weight loss program to the community," said Willis.

In the meantime, anyone interested in losing weight can weigh-in at the YMCA on Wednesdays to monitor their own weight loss. YMCA staff will be available to assist in weighing, however they will not record weights or collect fees. Anyone interested in weighing each week should contact Liv Warren, YMCA Assistant Director, at 243-0508. "We really want to motivate people to keep trying and not give up. If weekly weigh-ins will help, we are glad to do it," said Liv Warren. "We are available to help you meet your fitness goals."

Team Lean 2011 will be a new and improved community weight loss program for long term results. Any Team Lean plans for the future will be announced on the hospital's website, www.mh-m.org, and through local media.

Team Lean 2009 was the third community-wide 12-week weight loss competition sponsored by Memorial Hospital and Manor and the Bainbridge/Decatur County YMCA. The team effort, mixed with the accountability of weekly weigh-ins and the chance to win some cash, has made Team Lean community competitions amazingly successful. The first competition in 2007 resulted in 906 people losing 16,154 pounds in 12 weeks. The second competition was just as successful with 13,115 pounds lost by 763 people. The third competition ended with a total weight loss of 8317 pounds. There were 106 teams beginning the competition on January 8, 2009, and 85 teams competing until April 2, 2009. In the individual competition, there were 231 participants at the beginning and 127 finishing the 12-week competition. The 2009 top individual loser, Buddy Earnest, lost 26.87% of his total body weight.

Team Lean 2009

The third Team Lean community weight loss competition has ended with almost 9000 pounds lost in 12 weeks. Team Lean is sponsored by Memorial Hospital and Manor and the Bainbridge/Decatur County YMCA, and is a proven motivator for many people to lose weight. The team effort, mixed with the accountability of weekly weigh-ins and the chance to win some cash, has made Tean Lean 2009 successful year after year. Cash awards were given to the "Top Team Leaner" and the Top Five Male and Female Team Leaners. In addition, cash prizes were given to the top 17 teams and the top 25 people in the individual competition. Winners were determined by the highest percentage of weight lost from the first weigh-in on January 8 to the last weigh-in on April 2. Buddy Earnest of GaNoles won $1500 as the "Top Team Leaner" after losing 26.9% of his total body weight.
