School Nursing and Atheletic Training
For
the past 13 years, Memorial Hospital and Manor has sponsored School
Nursing and Athletic Training programs in Decatur County Schools.
During the 2007-2008 school year, Memorial Hospital and Manor's School
Nurses received over 45,000 visits from students in Decatur County
Schools. Memorial Hospital and Manor's Comprehensive School Health Care
program now has nine Registered Nurses assisting approximately 6000
Decatur County students at the six elementary schools, the two middle
schools, and the high school. These nurses operate school clinics to
provide medical assistance for illnesses and injuries, and administer
medications. Memorial Hospital's School Nurses also provide blood sugar checks for diabetics, breathing treatments, lice examinations, and tube feedings. Other services offered by the school nurse program include monthly immunizations audits, and hearing, vision and dental screenings. School nurses teach educational programs such as "Red Flag, Green Flag," which is a personal safety program, and they also teach a human growth and development class. A drug awareness class, which will be taught by school nurses, will be added to the curriculum next year.
School nurses assist Memorial Hospital and Manor's Certified Athletic Trainer, Chris Summers, with annual athletic physicals for middle school and high school students. Summers works cooperatively with Decatur County School coaches and area physicians in providing a safe environment for the young athletes. For several years, the physicians and staff of Memorial Hospital and Manor have offered free athletic physical exams to students participating in school sports. Salaries, benefits and non-consumable supplies for School Nurses and the Athletic Trainer are funded by Memorial Hospital and Manor as a service to the community. For more information about the school nursing or athletic training programs, contact Carolyn Newberry, RN, BSN, Memorial Hospital and Manor's Director of Comprehensive School Health Care at (229) 248-2837.
