Community Education

Each month we offer free educational classes to the community.  This is our way of fulfilling our mission to not only treat your health conditions, but provide information that may help you manage those same conditions.  We are committed to you and your family, and improving the overall health of our patients and the community.  We will inform the community about the important health awareness topics each month.

Don't Let the Flu Get You Down 2015 by Dr. Winston Price

The dreaded Flu season is upon us and once again it is time to take the necessary steps to protect yourself, your family and your community by getting your Flu vaccine now. The current universal recommendation by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is for everyone over the age of 6 months to be vaccinated according to the proper ACIP guidelines. Thanks to the excellent collaboration by our public health departments the Flu vaccine is available at your health care provider, local pharmacy, county health departments and many school based clinics.

Although nearly half of the US population received the vaccine last year unfortunately many vulnerable populations did not and they placed themselves and their families at risk. The Flu can be a very serious illness and annually millions of people succumb to influenza related complications while thousands to tens of thousands die as a result of the Flu. On average more than 250, 000 hospitalizations are the result of getting the Flu every year. Young children, persons over 65, pregnant women and people with underlying chronic illnesses are more likely to suffer serious complications of the Flu. Last year, alone, more than 140 children died as a result of the Flu. The more common chronic illnesses that need protection from the Flu are asthma, COPD, heart disease, diabetes, immune deficiencies and persons suffering from debilitating illnesses. Persons living in nursing homes, hospices, group homes and those in crowded shelters are also at risk.

Last week in September represented the official Influenza & Pneumococcal kickoff campaign press conference held in Washington, DC. At the event the Director of CDC, Dr. Thomas Frieden received his Flu shot and emphasized the need for all health workers to follow suit. He was encouraged by the continuing success in that “95% of pharmacists and 89% of doctors/nurses were vaccinated last year”.  But he was also quick to point out that last year had “the highest hospitalization rate among seniors” because we still have not achieved the coverage rates that are ideal for that risk group. A known driver toward patients getting vaccinated is knowing that their health providers have been vaccinated and is encouraging the shot.

Several of the public health experts were optimistic about the formulation of this year’s Influenza vaccine and feel that the coverage for the strains of virus that have been seen thus far is a good match. This year also has ample supplies of vaccine ready to ship and newer formulations to meet consumer needs. The Flu vaccine can be completed as a shot or for many individuals as a nasal spray. One other recent addition is a product that contains no egg by-products and therefore is ideal for individuals who previously avoided taking the Flu shot because of severe egg allergy.

The CDC, The American College of Medicine, the American Academy of Pediatrics, The American College of Obstetrics & Gynecology and the American Academy of Family Physicians all highly recommend getting the Flu vaccine as the most effective way to prevent the Flu. They further stress that if you get the Flu and your healthcare provider recommends an antiviral medication it’s important to take the medicine as prescribed. Strict handwashing and not coughing into your hand are ways to prevent spreading infected material from person to person.
