Memorial Hospital and Manor Nurse Managers were hosted by Quality Director, Brandi Fitzgerald for a "get away" retreat on March 3, 2017.

The team of Nurses representing all departments in the hospital worked to review and plan for improvements in their respective departments.

Part of the activities for the day involved Team Building where the group was divided into teams and each team was tasked to build a tower with only the materials provided.  The tower that stood the tallest for at least one minute won. During the process "simple" barriers were imposed that mimicked every day obstacles teams must overcome to succeed. Have you ever had to do something without being able to see or not being able to talk or not using your dominant hand or being paired with someone you did not want to be paired with?  Each team planned a tower and tried to build the best one they could.  All the barriers wreaked havoc on the written plan.  At the conclusion of the exercise the teams debriefed and agreed that if the barriers are removed better towers will be built. So it is at work.  We must remove the barriers to excel.

The teams also reviewed the Pillars of BRIDGE.  We discussed our Mission, Vision and Values statements.  We took time to document what were the common errors for our Nurses when attempting to have effective communication. Finally, we conducted a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) Analysis on nursing at MHM in general. Going forward we will be building a platform for continuous improvement targeting removing barriers to our success.

After a MAGNIFICENT lunch prepared by the hostess, some of the best Nurses in SWGA departed to pursue great things and one of those had to be a nap!

The team will continue meeting routinely during the year to build plans and implement improvements that were identified during the retreat.

Several Memorial Hospital Employees and Administrators were good sports for taking a pie in the face to raise money for Relay for Life.
